Illegal Beer- Prague

Illegal Beer

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening- Alexander Woollcott.

I hear you, Alexander Woollcott. And if drinking beer is wrong, then I don't want to be right. But lucky for me, there are naughty little places like Illegal Beer that eagerly support my "hobby". Located only a short walk from Wenceslas Square and the bustling city center, Illegal Beer is one of Prague's best-kept secret. Narrowly avoiding the hoards of tourists, this local spot quietly serves up some of the Czech Republic's finest craft beers.

Illegal Beer pours an assortment of Czech beers including favorites from Falkon Independent Brewery, Pivovar Raven, and Pivovar Clock. For those of you who like to plan ahead, check out Facebook for an up-to-date list of beers on tap.

During my visit I had the hoppy, fruity Slovakian Hellstork Pink City 13° Session IPA.  Inspired by the original Thornbridge Jaipur IPA, Hellstork recreates the classic adding their own twist. (Fun Fact: Jaipur is known as "The Pink City of India"). Overall, it was pretty good. Next I moved on to the Raven 20 ° Double Cream Black IPA. I am not a big fan of stouts or porters beers, but I have admit, this Double IPA may have lured me to the dark side. It was a strong beer (8.7%), but rendered a perfect blend of roasted, fruity and chocolatey flavors. And once you go black...I'll stop.

Illegal Beer also has an excellent selection of foreign and domestic beers available by the bottle. Before leaving I picked up a Maryland brewed, Flying Dog Raging Bitch Belgian IPA.

Illegal Beer is not very big, but cozy enough to spend a couple of hours and enjoy a few beers with friends. The main room is dimly light with some very crafty, very cool glass bottle chandeliers. In addition, there are some pretty hilarious signs decorating the walls, as well as a list of what's on-top.
